About 20 caravans and mobile homes move moved into Preston Park overnight prompting joined action by Brighton and Hove City Council and Sussex Police.
The vehicles were seen moving into the park at around 11pm last night (Wednesday 5 June), with caravans and motorhomes positioned around the grass area next to the A23 Preston Road this morning.
The council said: “We are aware of the unauthorised encampment in Preston Park and our traveller liaison team will be visiting the site this morning alongside Sussex Police.
“Part of the visit will include a health and welfare assessment of households within the group and a discussion on next steps.
“We know Preston Park is incredibly popular with residents – particularly during the summer – and we will work with Sussex Police and the group to find a suitable resolution as soon as possible.”
Less annoying than whole summer of generic club events which bring even more ASB and make virtually no money for the city (but costs for the sponging corporate mates of council officials).
BHCC will charge normal residents to park in Preston Park, but permit the quaint caravan-dwelling folk to park for free!
Hopefully they are cleared out before all the tax paying members of the public use the park for sport and recreation on Saturday.

Why do you need a traveller liaison group? Just get rid of them and act in the name of tax paying, law abiding citizens
Why on earth are taxpayers having to pay for a “traveller liaison group”? Are these people being paid full-time to wait until it is time for them to go along and liaise? What do they do for the rest of the year? Surely this is a police matter, as they are breaking the law? It looks as if the Labour council are carrying on with the tired old policy of employing people with utterly useless roles, all in the name of diversity.
It’s a good question to be fair. The Traveller Liaison Group plays a crucial role in facilitating communication and understanding between the traveller community and local authorities. Their work is not limited to merely waiting to “liaise”; they engage in continuous efforts to mediate conflicts, provide support services, and ensure compliance with legal and social obligations. This proactive approach helps prevent issues from escalating into more serious problems that would require police intervention. Additionally, their work contributes to fostering community cohesion and reducing misunderstandings, ultimately benefiting all residents. It’s a practical measure, not just a nod to diversity, but an investment in social harmony and public order.

Shame the Police missed the opportunity to actually stop them setting up camp when they had the chance. Numerous reports but it took the Police too long to respond hereby adding significantly to the costs.
Also a huge shame the park is now regarded as a free for all by the council for event that make zero money for the city, but ride roughshod over local residents with noise and inconvenience. Used to be a wonderful place to live, but last year we had nine straight weekends without a break due to events last year and many residents are forced to leave their homes simply to sleep at night. The council has only recently started liaising with residents, yet they have also given Pride the go ahead to extend to two weekends in a row from next year. Seems they are not listening one jot……
This was the quickest I’ve seen the caravans removed – well done to the council and police! Wonder how they did it so quickly 1 .
