A Brighton woman was arrested after a family were attacked in their home and two of the police officers who were sent to the incident ended up injured.

Sussex Police said: “A 37-year-old woman is being questioned by police after officers called to a report of domestic violence were themselves attacked.

“Police were called to a home in Melbourne Street, Brighton, at 10.45pm on Saturday (9 May) after a report that a woman inside had attacked a number of people including her partner, mother and a 15-year-old girl.

“Three officers who entered the home were assaulted by a woman who punched them, pulled their hair, spat at them and tried to bite them.

“The officers had to use incapacitant spray to subdue the woman so she could be arrested.

“Two of the officers were injured in the assault but were able to continue with their duties.”

Detective Inspector Jason Hazzard, who is overseeing the investigation, said: “The woman was violent towards both members of her own family and the attending officers.

“Thankfully the victims suffered only cuts and bruises when they were assaulted. The officers have not suffered any lasting injuries and to their credit are expecting to be back on duty this evening in Brighton and Hove.

“Neither domestic violence nor assaults on police officers will ever be tolerated in Sussex and we will seek to arrest and charge anyone responsible for it.

“We will be seeking the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service about what action should be taken against the woman involved and have contacted the child protection team and social services with a view to imposing measures to keep the family safe.”

A 37-year-old woman from Brighton is currently being questioned in custody on suspicion of assault and assaulting police officers.
