Four Brighton and Hove drink drive cases in first week of police crackdown

Five more people from Brighton and Hove have been charged after being arrested in the annual Christmas drink-drive crackdown, Sussex Police said.

One woman will face magistrates having been accused of having drunk more than three times the legal limit of alcohol.

Fiona Presley, 45, a cleaner, of Beaconsfield Road in Brighton, was arrested in Ditchling Road, Brighton, on Wednesday 23 December. She was charged with driving with 126 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Delivery man Antonio Souza, 43, of Erroll Road, Hove, was arrested in Kingsway, Hove, on Christmas Day. He has been charged with driving with 97 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath – almost three times the legal limit.

Joshua Taylor, 25, a manager, of Portland Road, Hove, was arrested in Stoneleigh Avenue, Patcham, on Christmas Day. He has been charged with driving with 62 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Sean Gosden, 50, unemployed, was arrested at his home in Norwich Crescent, Bevendean, on Christmas Eve. He has been charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Sarah Richards, 34, unemployed, of Melrose Close, Hollingdean, was arrested in Union Road, Brighton, on Saturday 26 December. She was charged with driving while being unfit through drink.

All five are due to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court next Tuesday (11 January).

Chief Inspector Andy Gooch said: “The volume of arrests we have made in Sussex this month demonstrates the blatant disregard a lot of people have for the law.

“At a time when most people are celebrating and spending time with their loved ones, it is disappointing to see that a number of motorists continue to ignore our safety advice.”
