Brighton man spared drink driving ban

Brighton stabbing suspect to face court charged with attempted murder

An unemployed man from Brighton has been spared a driving ban despite having more than three times the permitted amount of alcohol in his system.

John Duignan, 40, of Queen’s Park Road, Brighton, was arrested at Stanmer Park, Brighton, on Monday 14 December, Sussex Police said.

He was charged with having 111 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 4 January and had his licence endorsed with 10 penalty points. He was also ordered to pay a £300 fine, £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Daniel Nicolaou, 23, a plumber, of Walmer Crescent, Bevendean, was arrested on the A23 at Bolney on Saturday 12 December. He was charged with driving with 54 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath.

He pleaded guilty at Crawley Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday (6 January) and was banned from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £275 fine, £85 costs and a £28 victim surcharge.

School caretaker Peter Hutchings was also spared a ban. Hutchings, 28, a school caretaker, of Chandlers Mead, Cooksbridge, near Lewes, was arrested in Coldean Lane, Brighton, on Thursday 10 December.

He was charged with having 79 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath while in charge of a motor vehicle.

He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 31 December and had his licence endorsed with 10 penalty points. He was also ordered to pay a £170 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
