Brighton and Hove Albion footballer faces court accused of speeding

A Brighton and Hove Albion footballer is due to face court accused of speeding this afternoon (Wednesday 15 November).

Shane Duffy, 25, scored for his country in Dublin last night (Tuesday 14 November) as the Republic of Ireland lost 5-1 to Denmark and crashed out if the World Cup.

Less than 18 hours after the final whistle at the qualifying play-off second leg, Duffy’s case is due to start at Brighton Magistrates’ Court.

He is accused of speeding after his Mercedes car was snapped by the automatic camera on the A259 Kingsway on Hove seafront in April.

And he is charged with failing to reply to a notice from Sussex Police demanding the driver’s name.

But at 2pm this afternoon it wasn’t clear if the defender would turn up as the defendant and face the bench.

Duffy, who joined Albion in August last year and whose address was given as Sefton, in Liverpool, had not arrived in the courtroom when the case was listed to start.

And there was no solicitor present.

The case has been adjourned until Friday 15 December.
