Brighton and Hove Albion sell second player to Glasgow Rangers

Connor Goldson

Brighton and Hove Albion have sold a second player to Glasgow Rangers within weeks.

Connor Goldson is joining the Scottish Premiership side on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee reported to be about £3 million.

Connor Goldson

The 25-year-old central defender follows Jamie Murphy to Ibrox as new manager Steven Gerrard looks to build a side for next season.

Goldson joined Albion almost three years ago from Shrewsbury Town and played more than 40 senior games for Albion.

He was out for a long spell after heart surgery last year and in the past season he made just three Premier League appearances.

Albion manager Chris Hughton said: “Connor has done extremely well for the club in the three years he has been here,p but he wants to play regular senior football and at this stage we cannot give him that guarantee.

“Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy were exceptional last season and very consistent in the central defensive positions, which left Connor with very limited opportunities, and I totally understand his position and desire to want to play regular football.

“He has been a great professional and a pleasure to work with – and he has shown a great mental strength to come through a very tough time after he underwent crucial heart surgery just over a year ago.

“On behalf of everyone at the Albion, I would like to thank Connor for his time at the club and wish him all the very best for the future at Glasgow Rangers.”

Goldson was a schoolboy at hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers before signing for the Shrews.

He came to Brighton in 2015 and in the Championship he established himself as a regular in Hughton’s side.

But in February last year Goldson’s world was turned upside down when routine screening promoted the player to undergo preventative heart surgery.

He made a full recovery – and an emotional return appearance in a friendly against Fortuna Dusseldorf in July last year.

Goldson played well on his Premier League debut in a 1-0 win over Watford at the Amex. He also featured in matches against Chelsea and away at Liverpool on the final day of the season.

As a boy he was a Liverpool fan. He now has the chance to prove himself to an Anfield legend.
