Recommendations for specialist housing is expected to go forward at a Brighton and Hove City Council meeting today (Wednesday 27 June).

The Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee is monitoring progress at the Brighton General Hospital, the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) hospital in Elm Grove, as the trust wants to redevelop the site.

Officers are recommending that councillors support the regeneration, while asking the trust to include dedicated supported housing for residents with additional health needs and affordable key-worker housing targeted at healthcare workers.

At the moment half the buildings are used for a range of community health, mental health, rehabilitation and outpatient services as well as providing a base for a range of NHS and council community teams.

All inpatients moved off the site in 2009.

In a report to councillors the buildings and facilities are described as “no longer fit fur purpose”.

Covering the cost of building a community health hub  on part of the site or on adjacent land would be made by selling off some of the land for housing.

The hub would be a “state of the art facility” offering a range of health services.

A public survey on each of the options is open at www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/BGpublic

The Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee is open to the public at Hove Town Hall this afternoon.
