Hundreds without phone or internet after truck takes out BT wiring cabinet

Hundreds of customers have been left without phone or internet for more than two days after a truck smashed a BT wiring cabinet to pieces in Portland Road.

The accident happened shortly before midday on Saturday, destroying the cabinet. Engineers are now working on replacing both the damaged cabling and the cabinet.

A spokesperson for Openreach said: “We can confirm that a lorry has badly damaged one of our roadside cabinets on Portland Road, Hove.”

“Our engineers have isolated the power in order to make the area safe to the general public and also made sure that the damaged cabinet does not interfere with local traffic flow. Due to the severity of the damage the cabinet will however need to be replaced.

“We’ve already re-shelled the cabinet and our engineers are currently working on replacing the damaged cabling in order to reconnect those properties, whose service have been affected following this road traffic incident, as quickly as possible.”

A police spokesman said: “At 11.23am on Friday (6 July) we received a call from BT reporting that a van had collided with one of their roadside cabinets in Portland Rd, Hove, at the junction with Rutland Gardens.

“Nobody was hurt, no other vehicle was involved, and there was no request or need for police to attend.”
