Murder investigation launched after Deghayes brother stabbed to death

Police cordoned off the scene where Abdul Deghayes was found with stab wounds

A man has handed himself in to police investigating the death of a Brighton man.

Abdul Deghayes, 22, died earlier today after being found with stab wounds last night.

Sussex Police said: “Police investigating the murder of 22-year-old Abdul Deghayes in Brighton on Saturday evening (16 February) have arrested a man who handed himself in at Brighton police station on Sunday afternoon.

“The man is believed to have been present at the incident but detectives are still looking to trace other people who may have been involved.

“Abdul sadly died early on Sunday morning after being taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton following the incident in Elm Grove.

“He was found in the passenger seat of a silver Volkswagen Polo that had collided with a number of parked vehicles shortly before 9.30pm.

“The inquiry is being led by detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team who are considering where Abdul sustained the fatal stab wounds.

“It is believed that this may have occurred in Wellington Road and crime scene investigators and a search team have been conducting extensive examinations of the area.

“House-to-house inquiries are being undertaken by local Brighton and Hove police teams.”

Chief Inspector Andy Bennett said: “We are trying to establish the exact circumstances of what has led to this young man’s tragic death and we are keeping an open mind at this time.

“We are aware that the car was in collision with other vehicles shortly before he was found to have suffered these injuries, which we are satisfied were caused maliciously and not as a result of the collision.

“We would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time who may have witnessed the collision or who may have seen something that they may now regard as suspicious in the time leading up to it.

“We have made one arrest, but we are seeking to trace others who we think may have been involved. If you can help us and have not already spoken to our officers, please report online or call 101 quoting Operation Login. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

“Our thoughts are with Abdul’s family and friends at this tragic time and we have specialist family liaison officers supporting them.”

A 26-year-old man from Brighton remained in custody on Sunday evening (17 February) having been arrested at Brighton police station on suspicion of murder.
