Hard work pays off for Cardinal Newman students on GCSE results day

The hard work paid off for students at Cardinal Newman Catholic School on GCSE results day today (Thursday 22 August).

The school said: “Once again Cardinal Newman Catholic School has seen students achieve excellent GCSE exam results this year, with 85 per cent of students gaining a grade 4 or above for English and 83 per cent of students gaining a grade 4 or above for mathematics.

“78 per cent of students gained a grade 4 or above in English and mathematics.

“The new government accountability measures showed that Cardinal Newman Catholic School had a great ‘attainment 8’ score of 51.

“Particular success was seen in modern foreign languages where 91 per cent received a grade 4 or above and combined science where 75 per cent of students received a grade 4 or above.

“Students received an incredible 332 grade 9 to 7s which is equivalent to A to A* – 58 grade 9s (A**), 111 grade 8s (A*) and 163 grade 7s (A).

“Particular congratulations to Marc Pizzol who achieved an amazing 10 GCSEs at grade 9.”

The school highlighted another seven high achievers

  • Laura Wallace achieved 10 GCSEs at grade 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 8
  • Sean Keating achieved 11 GCSEs at grade 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 7, 7, 6
  • Benjamin Anscombe achieved 11 GCSEs at grade 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 7, 7, 6
  • Max Booth achieved 11 GCSEs at grade 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 8, 7, 7, 5
  • Louisa Connolly achieved 10 GCSEs at grade 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 8, 6, 6
  • Nyanna Simmons achieved 10 GCSEs at grade 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 7, 6, 5
  • Kaio Middleton who achieved 11 GCSEs at grade 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 7, 6

Cardinal Newman principal James Kilmartin said: “We are once again delighted to see our continued results success.

“This is down to the hard work and determination of both staff and students and we are very proud of each and every one of them.”

Dr Kilmartin added: “We look forward to welcoming many of them to Newman College, our sixth form centre, at the beginning of next term and the opportunity to celebrate these fantastic results.”

Head of school Claire Jarman said: “A huge congratulations to all of our students who have worked hard this year.

“We are equally proud of all of them, especially those who were dealing with personal circumstances and situations presenting extra barriers and obstacles to success.

“We know who they are and we celebrate with them today.

“Thank you also to the wider team of staff and parents and carers who have supported them to do their best. We wish them every success in the future.”

The school said that the key headlines this year included

  • 78 per cent of students passed English and mathematics at grade 4 – standard pass
  • 52 per cent of students passed English and mathematics at grade 5 – a strong pass
  • 73 per cent of students gained five or more GCSEs including English and mathematics at grade 4
  • 45 per cent of students gained the English Baccalaureate (EBacc)
  • 83 per cent of students gained a grade 4 or above in mathematics
  • 84 per cent of students gained a grade 4 or above in English
Kyle Follows at Cardinal Newman on GCSE results day

Kyle Follows, who passed 10 GCSEs, with three grade 9s, five grade 8s, a grade 7 and a grade 6, said: “I woke up really early this morning and I am so glad that I now know and all the hard work has paid off.

“I knew I’d put the work in but still didn’t expect to do this well.

“I am going to do biology, chemistry and maths A levels at Newman College and am also looking forward to being part of the Rugby Academy.

“I have really loved my time at the school but am looking forward to starting at the college. I hope to do medicine in the future.

“My mum is waiting in the car and we are going out with the family for lunch to celebrate.”

Laura Wallace, who passed 10 GCSEs, with seven grade 9s and three grade 8s, said: “I am completely overwhelmed. I worked really hard so had high hopes but am still shocked.

“We were visiting relatives in Switzerland and came back late last night especially to get my results today.

“This is amazing. I am going to do the International Baccalaureate and hope to study medicine in the future.

“I am looking forward to celebrating with friends now.”

Max Booth at Cardinal Newman on GCSE results day

Max Booth, who passed 11 GCSEs, with five grade 9s, three grade 8s, two grade 7s and a grade 5, said: “I am delighted. I am going to be studying mathematics, further mathematics and physics A levels at Newman College and am looking forward to being part of their Mathematics Academy which seems to have seen a lot of success in recent years.

“I am going to be celebrating these results with friends later.”

Mariam Habib Matta, who passed 11 GCSEs, with three grade 9s, five grade 8s and three grade 7s, said: “I feel really good. I am so happy. I am going to do politics, philosophy, history and maths A levels and hope to go into politics in the future.

“My dad is here with me and we will call the rest of the family now and then go out for a big family lunch.”

Tabitha Fawcus, who passed 10 GCSEs, with three grade 9s, three grade 8s, three grade 7s and a grade 5, said: “I am really happy and surprised. I am going to study the International Baccalaureate and hope to go into either science or English as they are my best subjects.

“I have come in with both my parents who are so very proud and happy. I am now going off to the Reading Festival to celebrate with friends.”
