More than 350 tonnes of Christmas trees were recycled by Brighton and Hove residents this year – almost four times last year’s total.
The trees, which were desposited at 26 different sites, have now been turned into compost.
Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, the city council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “It is an absolutely fantastic total, and we would like to say a huge thankyou to everyone who took along their Christmas tree for recycling.
“We think part of the increase is down to the fact we opened two extra recycling sites this year and made some changes to others to make them more accessible – the rest of it is down to everyone doing their bit and making a real effort to recycle.”
New recycling points were opened this year in Upper Bedford Street, Kemp Town and on the south side of Preston Park (in addition to an existing site on the north of the park). Sites in Queen’s Park and St Anne’s Well Gardens were re-sited to make them easier for more people to get to, and collection points in Mackie Avenue, Wish Park and Montpelier Crescent were extended.
