Brighton ice cream van man fined for flaky trading

A Brighton ice cream seller has been fined for trading illegally in his Mr Whippy van.

Abraham Khan was warned by members of  the Brighton and Hove City Council licensing team.

But he kept turning up in the city centre in his van and ended up being prosecuted.

Brighton magistrates fined Khan, of Caburn Height, Southgate, Crawley, £300 and ordered him to pay £500 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, the council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “Mr Khan was informed on a number of occasions that he could not trade on the pavement in The Quadrant and Churchill Square.

“No street trading is allowed in this very busy area to keep the pavements clear for pedestrians.

“However, he continued to return, which is why the decision was taken to prosecute.

“The council’s street trading policy is intended to protect customers and be fair to shops and businesses in the city, and to traders who have legitimately applied for permits in other areas where street trading is permitted.

“Without any restrictions the city centre would be inundated with street traders.”
