Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas is to chair an event on sexism in the media in Brighton next month.
Speak Out on Sexism aims to highlight the links between media sexism and the attitudes that cause discrimination or violence against women.
It will be held at the University of Brighton’s Sallis Benney Theatre on Thursday 5 December at 7pm.
Dr Lucas said: “There are few things more important than ensuring that every member of our community feels safe in their own home, in their workplace, community and school.
“Sadly, for far too many women and girls in the UK this is simply not the case – and there is strong evidence that media sexism is playing a significant contributory role.”
Also speaking at the event are Melissa Benn, the author of ‘What should we tell our daughters? The pleasures and pressures of growing up female’, No More Page 3 founder Lucy-Anne Holmes and former Labour councillor and Brighton and Hove Independent columnist Jean Calder.
The event is being organised by Brighton Women’s Voices, a network of women’s organisations that makes sure that women are considered when policy is being made in Brighton and Hove.
It is being supported by the Safe in the City Partnership as part of its 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women campaign.
