Two men from Portslade are among 20 people to have been arrested for drink driving or related offences during the annual December crackdown by Sussex Police.

Clayton Spry, 39, was arrested at 6.20pm on Friday (5 December) in Gardner Road, Portslade, after officers were given information that a motorist in the area could be over the limit.

Spry, of Gardner Road, Portslade, was charged with drink driving and released on bail to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 29 January.

Jeffrey Green, 40, was arrested at 11.20pm on Saturday (6 December) in New England Road, Brighton, after officers saw his car swerve in the road.

Green, of Church Road, Portslade, was charged with drink driving and released on bail to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Friday 30 January.

The force said: “A total of 20 people have now been charged with offences as part of Sussex Police’s Christmas crackdown on drink and drug driving.

“For the first time, the December campaign is being run jointly by Sussex Police and Surrey Police alongside Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, Drive Smart in Surrey and the independent charity Crimestoppers.

“As part of Operation Dragonfly – Sussex Police’s year-round strategy to remove drink and drug-drivers from the streets – road policing unit officers are on dedicated patrols looking for offenders.

“Teams will also respond to tip-offs from members of the public who see someone they know has been drinking getting into a car to drive.

“The names of all those charged are being proactively published.”

The police are using social media, including Twitter, as well sharing details of those who are arrested, charged and convicted with the media.

The force said: “People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk.

“You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

“To keep up to date with officers looking for drink drivers, follow #opdragonfly on Twitter.

“If you know someone is driving while over the limit or after taking drugs call 999.”
