UKIP criticises opponents for intimidating potential candidates

The UK Independence Party has criticised some of its opponents for intimidating potential candidates.

The party has nominated candidates for every ward in Hove in the local elections on Thursday 7 May. But the other two constituency parties had more difficulty in attracting candidates.

Nominations closed at 4pm today (Thursday 9 April).

In total the party is contesting 24 of the 54 seats in 13 of the 21 wards represented on Brighton and Hove City Council.

UKIP currently has one councillor, Leigh Farrow, who represents Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, having switched from Labour.

Nigel Carter, chairman of the party in Brighton Pavilion, said that more people would have stood but potential candidates had been intimidated in a way that undermined democracy.

He said that often it was the spouse or partner or other family members whose fears were taken into account when making the decision not to stand.

He said: “The party is libertarian. It is not racist, it is not homophobic and it is not fascist. It is a British libertarian party that sees politics through the eyes of the individual and puts the individual first.”

The nastiest wing of the Tory party grab for the victim card at the slightest opportunity. They’re even bigger cry babies than their big sister party.

In other words UKIP is sufficiently unpopular that it is unable find enough members in the city to even contest all the wards.

    Let’s make B&H a UKIP free zone!

Don’t know about making the city UKIP free, but making it Green Free would be an excellent first objective!
