The former mayor of Brighton and Hove has spelt out why she’s standing for Parliament at the general election next month.
Jenny Barnard-Langston is running as an Independent after becoming disillusioned with conventional party politics.
She said: “I am committed to representing the voice of Hove and Portslade people in Parliament.
“Many tell me that they are disillusioned by party politics and as a former member of two parties I share their view.”
Mrs Barnard-Langston has served as a councillor on Brighton and Hove City Council and stood for the House of Commons for the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.
She quoted Winston Churchill, who also represented both the Liberal and Toy parties, as saying: “Some men change their party for the sake of their principles – others their principles for the sake of their party.”
She said: “My principles are clear. I am dedicated to the quality of life for all people in Hove and Portslade and will not be bound by party allegiance.
“I will be a visible and accessible MP, serving the interests of all constituents.”
Mrs Barnard-Langston, an experienced school governor and former health worker, is keen to promote better education, open and transparent funding arrangements for schools with buildings fit for purpose.
She also pledged to protect the NHS and put patients before profits while seeking to improve mental health services for children and young people.
And she promised to vote to repeal the bedroom tax.
Mrs Barnard-Langston has fostered 30 teenage children and chairs a charity serving children and adults with learning disabilities.
