New members are signing up for the Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrat Party despite the disappointment of the general election and local elections last week.
The party said that membership had grown by 75 per cent since last Thursday (7 May) from 120 to 210.
And it added that the increase had come at a time when national membership of the Liberal Democrats had grown by more than 11,500 people.
The chairman of Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats, Paul Chandler, said: “We are very excited by the number of the people who have joined the Liberal Democrats to help campaign in Brighton and Hove since the election last Thursday.
“We’re fighting back after the disappointment on 7 May and recruiting people who want to stand together against the distinctly unliberal things this Tory government is already planning.
“I shall be contacting each new member in person to find out how they want to help bring a distinctive Lib Dem voice to the city of Brighton and Hove.”
Shame it is not in the local news that the Greens have now passed 2000 local members and are now by some margin the biggest political party by membership in the city. Quite an achievement for a grass roots party without a high profile in newspapers and TV.
