A cyclist has been injured in a crash with a bus in Brighton this evening (Tuesday 12 April).

The accident happened in Lewes Road as a number 48 bus was turning right into The Highway on its way to Bevendean.

Southbound traffic was diverted as Sussex Police and paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service worked at the scene.

The seriousness and extent of the cyclist’s injuries were not known in the immediate aftermath of the accident which happened at about 7.15pm.

Staff from Brighton and Hove Buses were also at the scene where the bus had come to a halt, its windscreen shattered on the near side.

Some thing similar almost happened to me further down the road drivers really need to be aware of cyclist on there near side that they are over taking or being undertaken by or equaling in speed. When You are in the blind spot of a bus/van you have no idea why they are stopping until you pass them . . The only option is to cycle in the middle of the road . I wish him a speedy recovery .

I had an Audi try to take me down this morning up there. I was going past a stopped bus and he wanted to overtake. We all need to remind ourselves that people traveling on different modes of transport are mums, dad’s, brothers, sisters, friends. Take care of each other

It’s hard for cyclists and of course l wish the cyclist speedy recovery too. Dusk and dawn have odd light and high viz/lights and super traffic awareness must be used. Cycling on the Lewes Rd is better than the London Rd and over 25 years of cycling all has greatly improved with drivers and cyclists. But high viz is a must for all of us cyclists; l’m infuriated by the dark colours and no lights by cyclists. I do hope this guy wasn’t one of them.

My husband got knocked off his motorbike in that exact same spot last year. He was in a wheel chair for 10 weeks

that’s a nasty corner, lot’s of cyclist undertaking busses. Wish the person a speedy recovery and hope he/she was wearing a helmet judging by the windshield of the bus

Nice to see a better class of commenters here rather than the horrible Argus trolls http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/14422248.UPDATED__Cyclist_hit_by_bus_in_Lewes_Road/?ref=mr&lp=5#comments-anchor

But sadly, there’s still some victim-blamers here implying people are wearing the wrong clothes or headgear and so deserve to be injured, Robin! Yes, I’d be cautious overtaking that bus on the left, but why is it too much to ask bus drivers to follow the highway code and look before they turn across a cycle lane?

Sounds like you are laying the blame with the driver! I’m sure the law states NO UNDERTAKING! That applies to ALL road users. I’m sure the police will determine who’s at faul!
