Hundreds call for end to using schools as polling stations

Patcham by-election to be a five-way contest

Five candidates are standing in the Patcham by-election next month for a seat on Brighton and Hove City Council.

The candidates are

  • Bruno De Oliveira (Labour)
  • Charles Daniel Goodhand (UK Independence Party)
  • Madeleine Joanna Primrose Hunter-Taylor (Liberal Democrat)
  • Anne Christine Meadows (Conservative)
  • Eliza Wyatt (Green)

…

The seat became vacant with the resignation of Conservative councillor Lee Wares.

The Patcham ward has three seats. The other two are held by Conservative councillors Carol Theobald and Alistair McNair.

The by-election is due to take place on Thursday 6 May.

Anyone wanting to vote will need to have registered by Monday 19 April. The council said: “If you’re not already registered, or you’ve recently moved, go to gov.uk/registertovote.

“Think about the best voting option for you. Polling stations will be safe places to vote in May but there are other ways to vote.

“If you’d rather not go to a polling station, or you won’t be able to get to one on the day, you can apply for a postal or proxy vote.

“If you want to vote by post, apply early so your postal vote can be sent to you more quickly. You must apply for a postal vote by Tuesday 20 April at the latest.

“You can also ask someone you trust to vote on your behalf. This is known as a proxy vote. You should apply for a proxy vote by Tuesday 27 April.”

I heard the Green telling residents in Patcham that Labour is running. You can’t trust them. Then, in Hollingdean thay reporting the tories. They are play low for lovely tree hugers.

      Q. How do you tell when a Green Party activist is lying?

      A. Their lips move.

I’ve been googling the candidates. Labour in fact got 2 running (one is turncoat).

The Greens knocked on my door to canvas – told them to go away. Surely, you shouldn’t be canvassing during pandemic. The other 2 parties only left leaflets which is more sensible.

No, the Government guidance has been that active electioneering is allowed, but with masks and distance. It is helped by being outside.

The Labour candidate is of the Momentum kind – not real Labour.
As we can already see, the Momentum Labour councillors prop up the Green screwballs on the council.
As for the Greens – well, they lied about the figures for the Old Shoreham Road cycle lanes and one of their councillors is a paid employee of Sustrans – the Cycling Lobby Group.

The green candidate and labour candidate for Patcham were in the same party in the past, the Socialist Workers party. Funny that!

Johnny fake news. The only candidate to have been in another party is Anne Meadows..if she loses and joins the Greens, she’ll have the hat-trick. Any port in a storm!

Anne Meadows used to be Labour. I wonder if her views have changed or she thinks she has more chance as a conservative. Is Carol Theobold standing down ? She doesnt seem to get very involved locally or do much for the local area. She has a cushy job I think, takes the salary withou feeling she has to do much for it. Dont think that approach would work if she wasnt a councilor.

Can’t speak for whether Anne Meadows has changed her views, although she was always never likely to fit in with the Momentum faction, but Carol Theobald puts in plenty of hours. Some of the monthly planning committee meetings alone go on for 5-6 hours, and she goes and looks at the various sites before the meetings take place.
Don’t expect many councillors to be quite as visible or vocal as the excellent Lee Wares. He was exceptional. But don’t knock those who are diligent in their duties like Carol Thoebald, who would probably never to speak out to defend themselves from these sorts of cowardly and ignorant attacks.

Lee Wares was great, he really was and looking all these standing the most community minded is Bruno d’olivera.
