A cyclist was taken to hospital after being hit by police car in the centre of Brighton last night (Saturday 23 October).

Sussex Police issued an appeal for witnesses and camera footage this morning, with an investigation under way.

The force said: “Police are appealing for witnesses after a collision involving a marked police vehicle and a cyclist in Brighton.

“Emergency services attended the A23 Old Steine at the junction with St James’s Street around 8.40pm on Saturday (October 23) following the collision involving a pedal cyclist and a police car responding to an emergency call.

“The cyclist, a 27-year-old man from Brighton, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton as a precaution.

“He was discharged shortly afterwards.

“The road remained closed for a short period of time while emergency services responded to the collision.

“Officers investigating the matter are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch, in particular anyone who may have captured any relevant dashcam footage.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting serial 1335 of 23/10.”

What we need is more cycle lanes. There should be a designated cycle lane on every street.

Why have more cycle lanes when the cyclist never use them like old Shoreham road. Make them pay to use the road instead of leaching of us tax payers.

Oh cyclist don’t pay for roads boo hoo – NO thats a LIE

All tax payers pay for roads, not just motorists. Those who pay income tax and those who pay council tax are the ones who pay for roads, and that’s not just motorists. And anybody who buys anything in Britain also helps to pay for roads because VAT also contributes to the national coffers.

Using your logic that would mean drivers pay twice for the use of the road. Shouldn’t cyclists take some responsibility towards the upkeep for the roads they use? And drivers pay for insurance something cyclists never do. Sixty percent of cycles are unroadworthy with no lights or proper brakes and bald tyres and why do cyclist go through red lights? It should be law that all cyclist have permits like other country’s for them to be on the roads.

I pay more for the roads than you do, John.

I thought that most cyclists already assumed that we had – it’s just that the rest of us call them pavements…

A person riding a bicycle on the pavement is a clear symptom that the road feels too dangerous for cycling. It is a massive clue that a separate, safe cycle lane is needed.

    John,
Even when there’s a cycle lane next to the pavement in question or they’re harrasing pedestrians whilst avoiding using a nearly trafic free road? More a clue that many cyclists are totally irrsponsible with no regard for others…

What point are you making? Infrastructure should be removed if the users are perceived as irresponsible or selfish? I guess we’ll be removing motorways and other motorist infrastructure then?
