A Brighton man has been charged with “modern slavery” by criminally exploiting a 16-year-old girl.

Giuseppe Carella, 25, of Upper Rock Gardens, Brighton, appeared in court in Brighton yesterday and was told that he would be kept in prison on remand until at least next month.

Carella, formerly of Sutton Avenue, Peacehaven, and Brighton Road, Newhaven, was charged with arranging or facilitating the teenager’s travel with a view to her being exploited under the Modern Slavery Act 2015.

Sussex Police said this afternoon (Tuesday 21 December): “A man has been charged with the criminal exploitation of a girl in Brighton.

“Giuseppe Carella, 25, of Upper Rock Gardens, Brighton, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 20 December, charged with arranging the movements of a girl aged 16 for criminal exploitation, contrary to section 2 of the Modern Slavery Act.

“He was remanded in custody for an initial appearance at Lewes Crown Court on Monday 17 January 2022.

“The prosecution, authorised by the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service), follows an investigation by officers from the Brighton and Hove Community Investigation Team.

“Carella was arrested on Thursday 25 February when officers, who had been carrying out observations in the area, entered Carella’s room.

“(They) found the 16-year-old girl, together with a quantity of crack cocaine and heroin, cash and drug dealing items including scales.”
