A fitness club has applied for a drinks licence for its premises in Hove but neighbours have objected.

Hove Fitness Club, in St Heliers Avenue, has applied to sell alcohol every day from noon to 10pm.

The club said that it provided classes and gym facilities with a café and wanted to be able to sell alcohol because it was a social club.

Drinks would be served to members and their guests only, with a strict age policy – known as Challenge 25 – and a requirement for photo ID.

Two neighbours lodged objections so the application will go before a licensing panel made up of three councillors at a hearing next Thursday (30 May).

The objectors cited concerns related to the prevention of public nuisance and the protection of children from harm.

An anonymous objector, whose details were redacted by the council, said: “My concerns are that an alcohol licence in this location could cause noise and disruption in a peaceful residential environment.

“I understand that the gym would permit people to consume alcohol from 12 to 10pm every day on the outside terrace.”

Another anonymous neighbour, whose details were also redacted, said that the business was surrounded by family homes.

The neighbour said: “It would be inappropriate for the gym to operate a public bar or set any future precedent for that to happen.

“A public bar would not be in keeping with the nature and use of the site, as a gym, or the surrounding wholly residential area.”

The virtual hearing is due to start at 10am next Thursday (30 May) and is scheduled to be webcast on the council’s website.

Whats wrong with this country, ?? even considering a licence is beyond stupid, fitness club ?? or just another type in disguise ??? Start applying common sense to where drinking is allowed and for what reason ???? if not making money as a fitness club then it should close and NOT be depending on booze sales to exist.

Cant see the issue, they had a bar at their old premises next to Hove Park and I never saw any antisocial behaviour or silliness, just people enjoying a quiet drink and socialising. It’s a very friendly welcoming place and they used to put on themed evenings once in a while. I think the hours they are proposing sound reasonable and I bet there will be no issues, just people having a nice time, which Nimbies don’t know much about.

This place was allowed to take over the public space that was Davis Park.

health club selling booze is a contradiction in terms – fresh fruit and juice bar but booze?????

I was thinking this. Quite contradictory.

Some of you people are just idiots!!!! You obviously don’t know much about sports and social clubs. It’s a fitness club with a social side to it. People who train in fitness clubs don’t go out to get p****d, they merely have a social drink as someone who would go to a café to meet and socialise. I trained in both clubs when dragons existed on the current site and at Hove fitness when it was at Corals. They both had bars and alcohol licences never any rawdiness, so I know what I’m talking about. It’s not a pub or a night club, you need to get out more!
