Mum and son have lucky escape after car flips in pothole crash

A mother and child are said to have had a lucky escape after their car hit a deep pothole and flipped yesterday afternoon.

The accident happened on Manor Hall Road in Southwick at about 4pm on Monday. Passers-by pulled the mum out of the car, which had hit a parked van, as it leaked petrol.

The mother and her son were taken to hospital but witnesses said they appeared unhurt, although shocked.

One of the people who helped the woman out of the car, Kathy Kembery,  said: “We had to pull the mother out of the window, while the car leaked petrol.

“I was one minute behind. Apparently neighbours claimed this is the fourth car that’s hit the pot hole in the road and burst tyres.

“Both mother and child are safe but in shock. She claimed her head hurt, another lady checked her head, but until she goes to hospital, I actually don’t know how badly hurt she was.

“I felt for her son, looking through the window at his bewildered mum, he was in shock, so pale.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police said the crash resulted in minor injuries, and no arrests were made.

It will probably take a significant civil claim to make councillors take their responsibilities more seriously in terms of road maintenance. It’s not as if it is an unknown hazard.

The pothole was marked in yellow by the council therefore the council were fully aware of this so are responsible. Hopefully this will be a significant claim against the council and a warning to all councils and a reminder of their responsibilities.

I’m sorry to say I feel they couldn’t careless. If someone flips their car, falls off their bike into oncoming traffic they couldn’t give a damn. If they did they would fix the roads for which we have paid through our taxes and stop making pathetic excuses and wasting money on nonsense.
It’s there for all to see. They are a disgrace and shouldn’t be in the job.

That’s actually Southwick Street, not Manor Hall Road.

Take the councils (local and WSCC) to court, I recommend to take them to crown court as I sure the magistrates is limited to small amount ie small clames, I sure if they marked it out, leading to they knew it was there and never done anything to it meaning they are at fault.

Does anyone have a picture of the pothole in question? I’m curious to know what size we are talking about here.

I tripped over a pothole in Lewes early last year, and had to be taken to hospital with my shoulder cracked in 3 places. I asked a solicitor if I could sue the council, but was told that there is a minimum depth it has to be, before this could be achieved. I think it was 3 inches. Unfortunately this was below that dimension, so I could not do anything about it. And recently I saw that the pothole is still there. There was another large pothole in one of the main roads running through that town and that was very dangerous because any motorist or cyclist could easily have had a very nasty accident, since it was situated just around a corner. They had to make a quick decision to go around it. After some complaints, the pothole was filled in, but it looks like they could have done so with porridge, judging by its appearance now. It won’t be long before it will return to being the hazard it was before.

It was a deep pot hole ( several inches deep) and about 2 feet across and was reported months ago and ignored by the council .

I met the partner of the lady concerned yesterday and saw the dozens of photos he took at the scene.
Interesting to note that within an hour of the incident the pot hole was filled in by the Council!!!
The markings around the pot HOLE were not put there by the council but by a concerned resident.
Mother and child are recovering well. The car is a total write off. Terrible reaction by the insurance company who say that the driver was at fault, unless the council accepts responsibility

It’s very fortunate that the lady and her son ,,or indeed anybody!! Was not killed in this accident, and we are all dammed if we do,,and dammed if we do not call it out as it is,,and that’s this council is not at all concerned about any of its roads or PAVEMENTS, the whole county is in dire straits, and it should prioritise its responsibility’s, and go to the government for more funding for the right reasons we pay enough road tax for gods sake,!!!!! The aforementioned pot hole was filled in very sharply,I gather ,so it can be done ,.I had a nearly moment coming down Wilson’s ave last week of Brightons race day28th may, there is very large pot hole on the edge of the road, going south,,down Wilson’s Ave, it’s big,and very deep,no outline markings at all,I am pleased this lady and her son are ok,,BUT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED,???? FINGERS OUT,BHCC.

I now actually believe that councils are doing this deliberately in order to force more funding out of central government. This despite the fact there is none to be had, and even labour have said that they will struggle to find any.
However council payroll and pension costs are being met, and the diversity training is working well.
