Former Hove MP arrested

The former Hove MP and Labour defence minister Ivor Caplin has been released on bail after police arrested him on suspicion of engaging in sexual communication with a child.

Mr Caplin, 66, was kept in custody overnight as Sussex Police began an investigation into the claim. He is due to answer police bail on Thursday 10 April.

Another man, 40, was also arrested yesterday on suspicion of engaging in sexual communication online with a child. He was released on police bail until Friday 11 April.

Mr Caplin was arrested yesterday (Saturday 11 January) near Hove railway station after a sting by paedophile hunters.

The sting was live-streamed on Facebook and further footage of the arrest was shared online.

Sussex Police said: “We are aware of footage circulating on social media showing a man in Brighton being detained on suspicion of engaging in online sexual communications with a child.

“Officers can confirm that a local 66-year-old man was arrested on Saturday January 11 and currently remains in custody.

“This is an ongoing and active investigation.”

A confrontation with Mr Caplin was livestreamed on Facebook, lasting 30 minutes and attracting more than 36,000 views and 3,000 comments.

Further footage of his arrest was similarly shared online.

Mr Caplin is understood to deny any wrongdoing.

Not exactly a good role model for his successor Peter Kyle, who will be rapidly distancing himself if has any sense and values his reputation.
    Hope they’ve tagged him.
What happened to last year’s ‘serious allegations’ against Mr Caplin ? If he were innocent, wouldn’t Labour have reinstated him by now ?
Apparently he knows why St Patrick’s homeless hostel was closed in March 2024. Please interview him about it.

I’ve just looked and there is a brief report buried on BBC Sussex site, but like the Argus, they don’t name him.

It’s a fact that he was arrested, so very strange the Argus and BBC are doing this when it’s national and international news. I understand that the allegations are not proven, but media can report facts – they regularly name people who have been arrested (guilty or not) because they are facts their choosing not to do this is curious.

Any media outlet suppressing news which is both factual and legal to report will eventually suffer reputational damage and loss of public confidence, if like a certain late children’s TV presenter, that media outlet subsequently turn out to have been protecting an individual they shouldn’t have.
The certain late children’s TV presenter used to brag he was ‘protected at the highest levels’ but that statement alone should have rung alarm bells. A public figure shouldn’t need protecting if they are living a life commensurate with their public role and within the law.
Having parachuted all those councillor candidates in including the Leicester two to ensure a majority Labour council in May 2023, Mr Caplin is likely to be in search of a ‘Beam me up, Scotty!’ phone app as his political castle in the air looks increasingly rickety.

I think citizens should do their duty and share these stories around locally, the people of hove need to know, to protect their kids. Some of the nationals which have named him, from what I understand the child grooming hunters did months of work on this, had a lot of comms, glad to hear “steve” was arrested but surely the incident back in the summer relating to a vulnerable person in local homeless accommodation which was apparently NFA’d needs relooking at the victim needs to be re-questioned.

Respect to Labour MP Dan Carden who has called for an inquiry. Years ago there was talk of a westminister ring, which was buried by watson. Why? From my understanding he knows Caplin and I think even followed him.

It’s a really bad case, the alleged reliance on Chem Sex Drugs will only make this man more dangerous

The vast majority of Hove residents would be shocked if they looked at the Gay porn involving young men and dwarves(!!!) on the Ivor Caplin twitter(now X) website.
