Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries in coast road crash

A 16-year-old girl has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after she was hit by a bus in Western Road, in Brighton, this afternoon (Monday 26 May).

Police closed the eastern end of the road in both directions, including the Churchill Square bus stops, as they dealt with the aftermath of the accident, with buses diverted.

The accident happened at about 3.40pm and paramedics initially treated the girl was at the scene.

It involved a double-decker operated by Brighton and Hove Buses close to Deichmanns shoe shop.

Sussex Police issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

The force said: “Western Road has been closed in Brighton following a collision between a bus and a teenager.

“Emergency services were called at around 3.40pm and a 16-year-old girl was treated at the scene by the ambulance service.

“She has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Western Road has been closed from the Clock Tower up to H&M.

“Inquiries are ongoing to understand the full circumstances and the road will remain closed while this work is carried out.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Sunstone.

“Buses have been diverted and the public are asked to avoid the area.

“Thank you for your patience and we will provide updates as soon as possible.”

Western Road is a death trap. Buses overtaking eachother, taxis parked on the pavement, motorcycle delivery riders parked everywhere. How exactly has the fortune spent on redesigning the pavement and road benefitted pedestrians? 2 bus stops have been removed making life difficult for the elderly and disabled.

Ah yes – the Western Road ‘improvements’

The whole agenda for BHCC is to ‘improve’ things for (the declining number of) cyclists. Pedestrians and particularly the disabled are of lesser importance

Do you have the figures for declining cyclist numbers in Brighton and Hove, and data supporting the relative importance of cyclists compared to pedestrians and the disabled?

BHCC informed us that there had been a 66% increase in cycling across the city during the lockdown period and I have no doubt that those figures were correct. When restrictions were lifted cycling numbers reduced and continued to drop as people returned to work.
DfT and BHCC vehicle counters across the city also show a decline in cycling.

Yeah it’s called bitter experience. I don’t have to see the data that shows the removal of disabled bays or limitations on the roads to get to them. The fact that it now takes twice as long to do simple small trips into town on the rare occasion I’m well enough to try. The taxis have to pull up on the pavements, where else can they stop? Police are appealing for witnesses? Don’t buses have cameras now?

You’ve got a bit of weird obsession with cyclists..

There’s no space for buses to overtake each other any longer. That is part of the problem. They’ve made a total dogs dinner of this road after millions of pounds of bogus ‘improvements’, And the road surfacing is already breaking down too.

Bus’s should be governed on all town and city roads to 10mph. They do speed along and a lot of the drivers think they can do whatever they like due to Highway Code rules and due to there size.

Modern engines are not made to run at 10mph and this causes more emissions too. Teaching children the Green Cross Code again is the way to prevent injuries and deaths.

Onr thing to also take in consideration on that road, Churchill square, Nort Road and other parts of Brighto center is people’s lack of consideration, they just cross anywhere at anytime not considering driver they just walk and expect everyone to stop, I have many times seen people just walk infringement of cars and buses, to make things worse some off them are on their phone or headphones The centre is a nightmare, pedestrians, cyclists, delivery bikes, scooters, electric scooters, skateboards not using crossings, not waiting for the green light just go and swing infringement cars and buses. We are quick to blame drivers but it is time that non drivers also start taking responsibility for their actions. It is terrible what happened but people, think, get of your phone, look, be aware and be safe!

It’s so much more dangerous since the so-called Western Road improvements. Some people treat it like it isn’t even a road anymore!

Hope the girl will be OK but it might not be the buss drivers fault.

Western roads ‘improvement’ is a joke. It’s actually easier to walk on the road in traffic than use the cluttered pavements now with all the parked cars. The bus wing mirrors protrude onto the pavement so you can easily be taken out by a bus by just walking in your pedestrian area!
