A community-owned Brighton pub is crowdfunding to raise £2,000 to repair its oven and gas line.
The Bevy, in Hillside, Moulsecoomb, said: “It’s no trade secret that hospitality is on its knees. And it’s no secret that the Bevy has always struggled to make ends meet.
“If it’s so hard, then why bother? The Bevy is the only community-owned pub on a housing estate in the UK.
“But it is much more than just a pub. It’s an important community centre in an area with few facilities.”
Among the activities hosted at the Bevy are
- Family Thursday – Activities for children followed by a free family dinner
- Seniors Club – Every Friday, £7 for a home-cooked meal, pudding, tea, coffee, bingo and a raffle and regular trips out too.
- Disability Disco – A monthly inclusive disco for the community
- Music and Memories Café – Fortnightly sessions with live entertainment for people living with dementia
- Book Club – A new group for readers to connect and share
- Brains at the Bevy – University academics giving accessible talks on fascinating subjects
- Sustainable Food – All our food waste is composted to grow fruit, veg, and flowers for seniors’ meals
The Bevy appeal added: “Our community oven is in urgent need of repairs so we can continue to provide free meals to kids and feed our seniors. It’ll cost us £2,000 to fix the oven and gas line. Please help.”
