Communal food waste bins have started to appear on the streets of Brighton and Hove ahead of collections rolling out to central areas.
In March, 76,000 households in Queen’s Park, Hanover, Kemptown, Whitehawk, Central Brighton, Seven Dials, Roundhill and Central Hove will begin to get food waste collections.
The rollout began last October in north and eastern suburbs, and western suburb collections began in November.
Deputy council leader Tim Rowkins said: “In preparation our crews are currently installing communal food waste bins across the city. This will be done in phases ahead of the March start and the majority will be placed alongside or close to existing communal bins and recycling collection points.
“Residents in these areas will also soon start receiving caddies to use to collect food waste indoors and then transport to the communal bins.
“Our brand new specialist food waste vehicles all come with on board jetwashers so that these communal sites can be kept clean.
“A map showing where all our on-street communal bins is coming soon and will be available for residents to see before the service starts in March.”

In their 2023 manifesto Labour said they would consult residents and businesses on the location of communal bins, not sure they ever did bother consulting on it and pretty sure they’ve not asked anyone where the new food waste ones should be located. Residents views on stuff like location clearly not important to them now they are running the council and only mentioned when they are looking for votes.
Realistically, they are only going to go near the communal bins, aren’t they? Also, it is good to note that the one photographed is one of several sizes. Our one nearby, for example, is a wheelie bin.
They’ll probably put the food bins in yet another parking space separate to the spaces already taken by litter and recycle bins. Plus more over spilling to come .. sooo looking forward to it!!! What a s*** hole Btn and Hove has become!
The overspill only happens because some genius in the last green council decided to replace the 5 diesel side loading trucks that covered the 3 routes with 3 electric side loading vehicles that run out of charge most days and obviously 3 trucks covering 3 routes means if anything goes wrong or needs servicing a route doesn’t get collected. Oh and the cost, 3x the price…
Luckily with the food waste they purchased normal diesels and have a spare.
At the moment it looks like the bin people are on strike bins overflowing etc, so will these communal bins get regular emptying or will it be feast day for the foxes and gulls .
My area got early access. A good thing to note is that it’s managed by a separate company, Veolia; they’ve been decent at collecting them so far. Better than general waste and recycling at the moment, at least.
Brighton & Hove City Council has committed £1.2m revenue funding to
introduce a food waste collection service to be delivered directly by the
Council. This will enable the service to be introduced this year.

Municipal waste is ‘owned’ by Veolia once in the council container, site, vehicles according to the terms of the Integrated Waste Contract.
Incorrect. City clean collect the food waste recycling, glass and refuse.
Logic would say it’s probably not the staff, probably the vehicle fleet being nearly 2 decades old that causes a lot of the problems
No, I’m correct Dave.
“3.18 Food waste collected through the new service will be managed under the Council’s existing joint waste disposal contract with East Sussex County Council and Veolia.”

Wrong .
I sent you the link to meeting where it was established collections are by Environmental Services (ex Cityclean) .
BHCC has collection and disposal obligations. Disposal is mostly via PFI contract sites
Newhaven (residual)
Hollingdean (Dry waste)
Whitesmiths ( food and green)
Getting the waste from point of discard to the correct disposal site is the responsibility of BHCC for us. East Sussex that’s down to borough council.
BHCC has significantly kept collecting an in house service with the associated conflicts between management and union.
Food waste collections are by Environmental Services and no doubt in the ceasefire deals between Labour Group and Union.
3.18
Is
“Food waste COLLECTED through the new service (sic in house) will be managed……”
free food for Rats in a nice warm container and also a free home fir a few days. town not far from me had a rat problem so they put a one way rat trap under the bins !
Is it lawful to charge residents for parking permits and then fill up those parking bays which have been sold to residents several times over with street furniture? Who are they going to sell the food waste to? They sell our normal waste to Newhaven to burn for electricity.
Info on what happens to the waste is available on the council website and in the papers relating to the decisions on the scheme. So do a little research.
Why are they on the Streets already when the Sticker on it says not to use till March 2026.
You know full well it’s going to get used for other rubbish-saw them at the Flats down at Robert Lodge-Whitehawk today, yet they haven’t all been delivered to Estate as yet.
There are indeed some food bins on Bristol Estate.
Because you can’t install hundreds of large containers over night
Just like they start putting up the christmas lights weeks before they get turned on because it takes time to do the works!
I’ll wait untill they can prove the bins are emptied and cleaned correctly and don’t cause a health hazard or stink before I start using them.
As they say ‘I won’t be holding my breath’ !
I moved to Newhaven 9 years ago they were already collecting food waste. How can it have taken this long for Brighton to catch up.
One could be pessimistic and say it’s because of an upcoming legal obligation.
The council fail to empty the current communal bins immediatly outside my property so how they will manage to organise emptying the new food waste bins in addition I have no idea. The bins and rubbish piled around them are an eyesore. We need a different solution to coping with our waste.
It’s the same on The Drive in Hove. People are so selfish & inconsiderate leaving sofas, old lawnmowers, chairs, old toys, other furniture & the latest was 3 Christmas trees!! I often have to walk onto the road to do my recycling as the obstructions in the way are horrendous. I’m dreading the ‘food waste’ starting especially with the people round here & the hundreds of flats trying to use them. It’s awful now!!
