Mischa Barton makes her UK stage debut in Double Indemnity

Double Indemnity comes to Theatre Royal Brighton

Hollywood actress Mischa Barton (The O.C.) steps into the role of Phyllis Nirdlinger in the new stage adaptation of James M. Cain’s iconic crime novel, Double Indemnity, coming to the Theatre Royal Brighton this March. Making her UK stage debut, Barton brings the ultimate femme fatale to life in a production that blends suspense, glamour, and classic film noir.

Set in 1930s Los Angeles, against the backdrop of the Great Depression, Walter Huff, a sharp-eyed insurance salesman, has built his career spotting scams. But when he meets the dangerously seductive Phyllis Nirdlinger (played by Barton) to discuss her husband’s life insurance policy, he is drawn into a web of lust, greed, and betrayal. Together, they plot the perfect crime: murder the husband, cash in the policy, and disappear into the Californian sunset. Yet passion clouds judgment, and guilt corrodes even the most carefully laid plans. As mistrust grows, Walter and Phyllis must navigate not only the law, but each other.

Speaking about her character, Barton says, ‘She’s multi-faceted and has strong opinions about not being tied down in a man’s world, which leads her to all sorts of things… like murder. But at the end of the day, she knows what she’s doing and she’s not going to let any man take her down.’ The character Phyllis has a dark, irresistible charm, and the danger that comes with being the ultimate Hollywood femme fatale.

Barton, already celebrated for her film and television work—including The Sixth Sense, Notting Hill, Neighbours, and Invitation to a Murder—returns to her theatrical roots, having starred in critically acclaimed plays from an early age, including Tony Kushner’s Slavs! and James Lapine’s Twelve Dreams at New York’s Lincoln Center. Her stage experience ensures she fully embodies the cunning, seductive, and ruthless Phyllis, rather than simply reprising a screen archetype.

Joining Barton is an ensemble cast: Ciarán Owens as Walter Huff, Martin Marquez as Keyes, with Gillian Saker, Joseph Langdon, Oliver Ryan, and Sophia Roberts covering multiple roles. The production is adapted for the stage by Tom Holloway, directed by Oscar Toeman, with set and costume design by Ti Green, lighting by Josh Gadsby, sound design and composition by Dan Balfour with additional composition by Zak Gavi.

Double Indemnity fuses the tension and glamour of old Hollywood with the dark elegance of classic noir storytelling. It is a story of desire, deception, and the human capacity for moral compromise, brought vividly to life for modern audiences.
