The 40th Children’s Parade marked the start of the Brighton Festival, with the mayor of Brighton and Hove, Amanda Grimshaw, heading a cast of thousands.
The theme of this year’s parade was “Read all about it” and, as usual, inspired an impressive variety of colourful artwork and costumes.
Six genres of children’s books were on show – realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, traditional stories, science fiction and graphic novels and picture books.
The parade was, once again, jointly produced by the award-winning community arts charity Same Sky and the Festival which is celebrating its 60th edition.
The theme was inspired by the National Year of Reading and the parade – possibly the largest of its kind in Europe – started in New Road and ended in Madeira Drive.
More than 50 schools and youth organisations took part, most of them from Brighton and Hove.
