Hove MP says ‘I wasn’t plotting to topple PM. I was watching the Devil Wears Prada’

Peter Kyle and Sophy Ridge

Labour MP Peter Kyle said that Wes Streeting and he weren’t plotting to topple the Prime Minister, they were watching the Devil Wears Prada.

The Hove and Portslade MP spoke about his cinema trip in a television interview when asked about the leadership ambitions said to be harboured by Mr Streeting who is a cabinet colleague and friend.

Mr Kyle told Sophy Ridge on Sky TV that if Mr Streeting wanted to oust Sir Keir Starmer and run for his job as Prime Minister, he would not be spending his weekend watching The Devil Wears Prada 2 at the cinema.

Sophy Ridge also tweeted about the exchange. She wrote: “Wes Streeting and Peter Kyle went to watch the Devil Wears Prada over the weekend. Here’s Peter Kyle’s account to me.

“‘Wes and I, last weekend, we were out campaigning together in Ilford. And let me say, he achieved a stunning result with that whole team in Ilford.

“That shows what a great campaigner Wes is. After we campaigned, we went for dinner and we went and saw a movie together.

“Somebody who was planning to pull the plug and launch a leadership bid in a couple of days’ time, doesn’t go to the cinema with a friend.’

“SR: What did you go and see?

“PK: Devil Wears Prada.

“SR: Did you discuss the leadership?

“PK: Wes and I talk about the leadership of the country all the time. Wes and I shared an office together for nine years.

“We spent so much time talking about the leadership of the country. We almost never spoke about the individual.

“Wes and I care so much about the future of the country. We have a very shared view of public services in the modern world.

“About what Britain’s potential is among our competitor countries. We both care deeply about the opportunities that young people have.

“Also, we were friends going to the cinema and we had a good laugh about other things as well.

“Wes and I are very good friends but I’m not going to fall into the trap of being his spokesperson. But what I can tell you is that he, like me, is focused on the success of this government.

“His primary mission in government is making sure the whole government is a success and he is there for Keir when he needs him.”

Wes Streeting & Peter Kyle went to watch the Devil Wears Prada over the weekend – here’s Peter Kyle’s account to me:

“Wes and I last weekend we were out campaigning together in Ilford. And let me say, he achieved a stunning result with that whole team in Ilford. That shows what…

Not long ago Peter Kyle also said that Keir Starmer appointing Peter Mandelson as US Ambassador was “worth the risk”.

Back in 2024, just hours after Peter said in Parliament that his party ‘raises standards in public life’ it came to light that he had broken the rules by declaring his £500+ freebie Taylor Swift late.

He also pledged to support WASPI women before the last election and backtracked on that. There are many more examples of issues and problematic comments, like undeclared potential conflicts of interest, u-turns, and disturbing positions he has taken to try and stick up for his failing governments mistakes and car crash policy making.

So there isn’t much of a record to go on if Peter really expects us to believe that he and pal Wes did not discuss the PM’s leadership of the party and what the future might look like post-local elections on their cinema trip.

It never ceases to amaze me how the media tweaks and edits opinions to allow dodgy narratives.

On Question Time, BBC 14th May, the Labour guest seemed to agree with the Reform guest that welfare should be cut to fund defence.

The Reform guest had made sure that line had been articulated right at the start of the programme before viewers switched off. They avoided saying that their welfare cuts would slash Universal Credit payments, child payments, housing payments, Pension Credit, food banks and so on. UC payments goes to 8.4 Million claimants.

Who wants to see more rough sleepers, more addicts outside of Waitrose, more undernourished pensioners while the military practices with their new killing machines, drones, etc.?

Talk of public services without addressing these issues is meaningless.
