Flooding delays journey home for Brighton and Hove commuters

Flooding has delayed the journey home for thousands of commuters from Brighton and Hove this afternoon (Wednesday 13 January).

Network Rail said that flooding had been reported in the Clayton Tunnel – between Hassocks and Preston Park stations – shortly after 3.45pm.

Staff started a walk-through inspection about 20 minutes later, with concerns that the flood water could move the ballast supporting the tracks. If so, the tracks could shift out of line, risking a derailment.

Some trains were diverted via Lewes while others were delayed or cancelled. The train operator Southern also booked replacement buses.

Shortly before 5pm Southern said that the line had been reopened.
