Brighton Magistrates' Court

Two teenagers were stabbed in Brighton on New Year’s Day.

A Brighton maintenance man has been charged with carrying out the stabbings and is being held in prison while he waits for the courts to deal with his case.

Sussex Police urged anyone who saw what happened to come forward, saying: “Detectives are appealing for witnesses after two teenagers were stabbed in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

“Police arrested a man following the incident in Temple Street, Brighton, about 3.50am on Tuesday (1 January).

“Both victims were taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital – they are a 17-year-old local boy, who sustained a wound to the chest, and an 18-year-old local man, who sustained wounds to his right forearm and left hand.

“Neither injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

“There were a number of people in the area at the time and police are appealing for any witnesses to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 467 of 01/01.

“Alternatively, you can visit the Crimestoppers website or contact the independent charity anonymously on 0800 555111.

“Alex Besmir, 36, a maintenance employee, of Temple Street, Brighton, was arrested and remanded in custody to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on (Wednesday) 2 January, charged with committing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“He has since been further remanded ahead of a further hearing at Lewes Crown Court on (Wednesday) 30 January.”
