Former Brighton councillor meets Rail Minister as Which? reveals Southern’s poor customer satisfaction rating

Former Brighton councillor urges Prime Minister to sort out Southern trains

Maria Caulfield

Former Brighton councillor Maria Caulfield has had a meeting with Rail Minister Andrew Jones after a report by Which? said that Southern had a customer satisfaction rating of just 34 per cent.

Mrs Caulfield, the Conservative MP for Lewes, said that this was the joint second lowest in the country.

She said: “The Which? annual rail survey found that 48 per cent of rail users find travelling by rail frequently stressful, with some people even reporting that they have had to move house to escape a nightmare train journey.”

Although the Southern Rail service has improved over recent months many passengers are still reporting short-formation trains, last-minute cancellations, station skipping and overcrowding to the MP, who is a commuter herself.

She said that she discussed Southern and raised the issues directly with the Rail Minister.

She said “While there have been improvements in the rail service locally, I am still receiving far too many complaints about Southern.

“This is unacceptable for my constituents and I can see why the latest Which? rail survey places Southern Rail as the joint second worst train operator in the country.

“I will continue to raise the poor performance of Southern Rail with ministers until we see a solution – and ideally the operating contract removed from Southern Rail.”
