Hove car thief jailed after 130mph chase

A man has been arrested on suspicion of having a firearm by police investigating reports of shots being fired in Brighton.

No weapon has been found but officers have also arrested a second woman on suspicion of helping an offender and a man also suspected of helping an offender.

The shots were reported to have been fired in East Drive, near Queen’s Park, last Sunday (4 August).

On Monday (5 August) a woman was arrested in Birdham Road, Moulsecoomb, on suspicion of helping an offender.

Sussex Police said this afternoon (Sunday 11 August): “A 21-year-old man, sought after reports of gun shots heard in the East Drive area of Queen’s Park, Brighton, last Sunday (4 August), has been arrested.

“Following extensive inquiries, the man was arrested in Croydon on Saturday night (10 August) with the assistance of the Met and transported into custody in Sussex on Sunday afternoon (11 August).

“The man, of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

“A 22-year-old woman from Brighton was also arrested at the same time on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“A firearm believed to have been involved, is still being sought.

“Further to this, a 24-year-old man from Croydon was arrested in Godstone, Surrey, on Sunday afternoon (11 August) on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“All three suspects remain in custody at this stage.

“A 42-year-old woman from Brighton, arrested on Monday 5 August on suspicion of assisting an offender and failing to comply with conditions of a shotgun certificate, remains released on conditional bail pending further inquiries.”

Superintendent Julia Pope said: “Arrests have been made following extensive inquiries and I thank the public for their understanding in this sensitive policing operation.

“The incident involved individuals known to one another and, although there was no information to suggest a risk to the wider public, we have ensured additional high-visibility patrols in the area to provide reassurance.”

Sussex Police added: “House-to-house inquiries have been made and police continue to urge anyone with information, or who saw or heard what happened, to contact police on 999 or online quoting serial 1712 of 04/08.”
