Three adults and a child have been taken to hospital after being rescued from a fire in a house in Hove.

The fire broke out shortly before 3am in Leicester Villas, Hove and at its height, 50 firefighters from across Sussex were at the scene.

The four people rescued were taken to the Royal Sussex suffering from smoke inhalation at about 5.30am. Ambulance crews remained on the scene until 8am, when all people were accounted for.

A section of Portland Road has been closed off while emergency services work and a fire investigation has been launched into what started the blaze.

Crews from Brighton, Hove and West Sussex attended, joined 90 minutes later by more crews from Newhaven, Barcombe and Roedean.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “Crews rescued four people from the property and they were handed over in to the care of SECAMB. Crews used six breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, two main jets and 1 in 7 foam to extinguish the fire.

“Crews have isolated gas and electrics to the property as a precaution. Firefighters visited residents in the vicinity to offer both reassurance and Home Safety Visits.

“As of 8.30am, we currently have two appliances on scene. An aerial ladder platform will be at the scene until Building Control can assess the building.

“We would like to thank both SECAMB and Sussex Police for their support during the incident.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known and a Fire Investigation will take place in due course, once the building is deemed safe to enter.

“All persons are accounted for from the building.”
