A car-free city centre? Chamber of Commerce to steer the big debate

Dozens of people are joining the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce Big Debate this evening (Tuesday 19 May) on business and politics.

The Chamber said that there were some tickets still available for the popular quarterly event which is being held at the Brighthelm Centre, in North Road, Brighton, from 6pm to 8pm.

The free event is open to members and non-members who will debate for and against the proposition: “There is no place for politics in business.”

The evening will start with four speakers giving their point of view before questions and contributions from the floor. The guest speakers are

  • Greg Hadfield, editorial director, Brighton and Hove Independent
  • Natalie Lloyd, director at Say Digital and digital architect at Fathom
  • Fiona Martin, director and head of employment department, Martin Searle Solicitors
  • Andy Winter, chief executive, Brighton Housing Trust (BHT)

The debate will be chaired by the award-winning former BBC news journalist and public relations consultant Steve Bustin.

Among the questions that are expected to be addressed are: “Is mixing business and politics a recipe for disaster?

“Should they be kept completely separate, with business allowed to thrive without interference from politicians? Is this even possible?

“Do politicians understand the realities of business or is commerce just another campaign battleground?

“Do you think one party stands out as a genuine supporter of business, or are they all as misguided as each other?

“What policies would help or hinder business at a national and local level?

“What role should businesses play in influencing politicians? How should their voice be heard?”
