A new four-storey student hall of residence has been approved for Brighton.
Permission was granted for the scheme by the Brighton and Hove City Council planning committee yesterday.
The 39 en suite student flats will be built opposite Sainsbury’s in Lewes Road and managed by the Brighton University.
Councillor Lynda Hyde, chairman of the planning committee, said: “There’s a pressing need for new homes in the city.
“Student halls of residence help relieve pressure on the city’s housing stock because students would often share family homes.”
Brighton University is also carrying out a major refurbishment of the flats at the Varley halls of residence in Coldean to create more accommodation for rising student numbers.
