Sixteen Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence against Women is an international campaign that runs from Monday 25 November (UN International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women) to Tuesday 10 December (Human Rights Day).

It aims to raise awareness of violence against women and to work to end it.

This includes making sure women know where to go for help and sharing stories about people’s experiences and work.

This year, Brighton and Hove City Council and the Safe in the City Partnership are supporting local services and groups in running a series of events to mark the 16 Days of Action.

Safe in the City will be publishing a series of blogs from survivors of domestic and sexual abuse about their experiences, as well as information from professionals about their work to help keep people safe in Brighton and Hove.

Contributors include staff from Sussex Police, RISE and Survivors Network.

The events include a comedy night to raise funds for local services, a discussion of sexism in the media chaired by Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas and free fitness-based self defence workshops for young women.

The workshops are open to girls and women aged 13 – 25.

They take place on Tuesday 26 November and Tuesday 3 December at 4pm at the King Alfred Centre in Hove.

The 16 Days of Action also includes World Aids Day (Sunday 1 December) and the White Ribbon Campaign, which calls on men to make a pledge to never commit or condone violence and abuse.

The full programme of events is on the Safe in the City Partnership website.

You can follow the campaign on Twitter under the hashtag #16days.
