Brighton mum and business woman Kate Pritchard is known among friends for her amazing cakes.

Today (Wednesday 6 August) she baked raspberry and pistachio macaroons to calm her nerves ahead of her first appearance on the BBC’s Great British Bake Off.

Just made these Raspberry and Pistachio Macarons… Well, it would be rude not to. #gbbo @britishbakeoff #abitscared pic.twitter.com/T5ZWTvXXGk

First up was Kate’s signature bake of a red velvet Swiss roll with white chocolate butter cream and floral decorations.

It was a beauty to behold even though the sponge split.

Mary Berry described the decoration as “wonderful” and Paul said it had the best swirl.

However, a dry sponge meant Kate was an also ran.

After the first challenge she said: “I’m near the bottom I would say because things have to taste good and a dry sponge is never good.”

Mary’s cherry cake is a horrendous technical challenge.

Burning the toasted almond decoration didn’t help matters for Kate and her offering was considered over-baked and dry.

A good distribution of cherries saved the day as she was a solid sixth out of 12.

“They’re not dry!” Kate exclaimed as presented Mel scoffed her off cuts during the show-stopper challenge to create 36 identical miniature cakes.

It was down to the wire for her mini tiered Victoria sponges.

Despite the delicate pink icing decoration Paul described them as bland looking and were a good back but lacking in flavour, according to Mary.

Kate, who owns Treacle Furniture is back again next week for the biscuit challenge.
