Pictures captured by a security camera could prove crucial as detectives try to catch a rapist who attacked a woman in the Patcham area of Brighton.

Sussex Police said: “Detectives are hoping this man may have vital information in connection with a rape in Brighton last summer.

“At around half midnight on Sunday 25 June, a 44-year-old woman was walking south along the A23 from the BP roundabout at the junction with the A27 towards Brighton.

“A man approached her, having possibly crossed over from the other side of the road, and tried to engage her in conversation.

“He linked his arm through hers and after walking beside her for a short while he pushed her violently to the ground and threatened to hurt her.

“He then raped the victim before walking back towards the roundabout.

“This CCTV image shows a man who was shopping in the BP garage around half midnight and may have seen something which could help with the investigation.”

Detective Constable Jack Sagar, from the Brighton and Hove Safeguarding Investigations Unit, said: “We have this very good CCTV image of this man who was in the area at the time of the offence and think he could possibly help.

“Is this you or do you recognise this man? Please get in touch.

“We have carried out significant and extensive lines of inquiry in this investigation and we have forensic evidence that means we can confirm who was involved in these offences.”

Anyone with information is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101 or get in touch online, quoting Operation Attwood.

Why is it being shared 7 months after the incident?

A very good question Claire. Maybe SussexPolice have only just received the CCTV images but whatever the reason it’s absolutely essential they find this individual so he can shed light on what he may have seen on the night
