People in Hollingdean have less than two weeks left to have their say on a proposed controlled parking zone.
Hollingdean is one of the last areas on the edge of the centre of Brighton that is not covered by a controlled parking zone.
Residents immediately felt the effects when “zone U” was created, covering the Bear Road and Coombe Road areas, with drivers moving their vehicles on to roads in Hollingdean where parking remained free.
The latest public consultation is being carried out by Brighton and Hove City Council and is a prelude to restrictions every day from 8am to 8pm.
It comes a year after the council first asked Hollingdean residents if they wanted parking permits in their area.
Then, Labour councillor Theresa Fowler, who represented the old Hollingdean and Fiveways ward, spoke out.
Councillor Fowler said that she felt that an increasing number of nearby “car-free” student housing schemes had resulted in more cars parked in the area for long periods.
Horton Road and Hollingdean Road are listed on the Road Trip Heroes website and app, alerting drivers to free parking areas in Brighton and Hove.
If Hollingdean residents back the new zone, annual permits for private vehicles look likely to range from £146 for low-emission cars to £193 for standard-emission cars and £335 for high-emission vehicles. There would also be a premium for second and third vehicles.
A map of the proposed parking zone indicates that the roads would include dedicated areas for permit holders only and some bays also available for others to park in.
The map also highlights Hertford Road as a potential school street, where roads are closed off to all but residents and blue badge holders at the start and end of the school day.
The online consultation asks Hollingdean residents if they like the proposed parking zone design, if they are a resident or business and how many vehicles are linked with their home or business.

Why not milk cyclists for the Council’s coffers for a change eh?
What a stupid typical car-brained response.
Because cyclists aren’t causing the parking problem. It seems basic maths is a problem for you so let’s see:
More bicycles = less cars
Less cars = more parking spaces for YOU
Why aren’t you pro-cycling?
I despise the non-stop bullying and persistent targeting of one type of road user – drivers – by the council. If the council persistently targeted cyclists for more and more money, i’d be saying the same thing in defence of them.
But because they can’t yet get their grubby little hands on them, they are safe for the time-being. It’s not ok for the council to constantly harass one demographic to finance themselves.
More pointless unused cycle lanes = more pollution
Who said anything about cycle lanes? Are you lost sir?
Also, another idiotic carbrain response, cycle lanes = less pollution. There’s a well established link between improved cycling infrastructure and a reduction in emissions. Countless forward thinking European cities are living proof of this but in the UK it’s fine to just say “hurr durr cycle lanes cause pollution” I suppose.
Ah, that’s not the whole story though Judas. There’s also quite a bit of academia that suggests that bikes increase congestion, and that has the knock-on effect of increasing pollution.
So, like most things in life, there’s a balance to be achieved.
What do you mean if residents decide?
The questionnaire went out over a year ago,and that was via an email? What about people that weren’t on the internet? There was two question
1) Do you want parking permits from Monday to Friday?
2) Do you want parking permits from Monday to Sunday?
No third option of we don’t want it all!!!
This is the Greens snidey way of persecuting the motorists they loathe so much by imposing a
(another) stealth tax on people, especially those least able to afford it with the cost of living crisis already driving millions into poverty! And let’s face it! It is a tax!
And then only the residents that bothered to reply to the questionnaire that went out?
Take upper Lewes Road for example?
Over 3,000 were asked if they wanted parking permits? Only 240 bothered to reply.
Of that 240, 168 said yes! And they were probrably not car owners, and more than likely the anarchist Green voters!
So because of 168 people, 3,000 people now pay £160 extra on their council tax!
It started at £130 yet in this short time, it has increased to
£160.
And it will continue going up as this is a new way to fund underfunded councils!
Now let’s take Preston Park Station?
The vote for and against parking permits was exactly 50/50 split. So the Greens went up to Dyke Road and Dyke Road and included them in the questionnaire until they got the vote swung in their favour!
Now let’s look at the area behind American Express in Edward Street?
The local residents complained that they couldn’t park outside their homes during 5he day.
“Why don’t you have parking permits” said the Greens? “That’ll free up your spaces! And it did!”
So American Expresss employees then parked their cars in Hanover!
Local resident complained that they couldn’t park outside their homes during the day!
“Have parkinv permits” said the Greens!
So they did!
Then American Express employees parked their cars in Queens Park and Elm Grove!
Residents complained that they couldn’t park outside their homes during the day.
“Why don’t you have parking permits” said the Greens? “That’ll free up your spaces”a
And it did!
And so on until the area between Edward Street and Bear Road wad covered!
The Bear Road area this time. And the excuse was students parking!
Same thing happened,7 at
Stanford Avenue/Preston Drove wanted nice empty spaces outside their ‘posh’ homes! They didn’t want any oi-perloi parking they’re 10-20yr old vehicles cluttering up their roads while you visit nanny or take the kids to Blakers Park!
Now you’ve got to pay through the nose for something that was (and should be) – free!
Traders just include the extra parking fee in their bills for work done on their properties!
But can any of you afford to do this too????
But that’s Brighton people for you!
Just like the rest of the country! Apathy and couldn’t care less, selfish view on life!
And I’m sick of all of them making life unbearable!!!
Most of the areas polled for parking permits only had a reply of about 5%! But less than 2% of this inflicted a tax, (a tax that was only ever going to go up more each year), was inflicted on the whole of Brighton!
And who does it hurt more???
The people that can least afford it!
But that’s the Greens idea of democracy?
Just their deceitful way of fleeing the motorists they loathe so much!
If lazy people got off their fat backsides and voted, and show one iota of intelligence, they’d say no to this deceitful way of getting more money from your pockets!
But there’s fat chance of that happening!!!
Everyone gets an opportunity to speak Simon, if people choose not to say anything, that’s also their choice, and you should accept that. Of course, you’re welcome to encourage them to use their diplomacy, and if you feel that strongly about an issue, convince people to take action!
I think the premium for second or third cars in a home is unfair and disadvantage people who need to drive to work. My partner and I are shift workers covering all sorts of weird times – you can work out why.
It punishes those who have multiple workers in their homes, and discourages working. I’d actually go the other way with permits for multiple cars, and offer a discount.
