Football match-day guest parking permits look likely to be scrapped

Free passes could go as council reviews scheme in Moulsecoomb and Coldean

Free football match-day guest parking permits look likely to be scrapped if councillors agree to end the scheme.

People living in Moulsecoomb and Coldean currently have an annual guest permit for visitors to use on match days, alongside their own free permits.

Brighton and Hove City Council had planned to introduce a £50 fee for guest permits after a public consultation in 2019.

Residents had raised concerns that guest permits were being sold or passed on to non-residents on match days.

A report to the council’s Transport and Sustainability Committee said: “There have been several problems and complaints from residents concerning enforcement during event days for the Amex Stadium in Coldean and Moulsecoomb.

“Civil enforcement officers do enforce illegal parking in the area but it appears valid visitor permits for the event-day parking scheme, which can only be issued to local residents, are being displayed by visiting football supporters.

“We do limit the visitor permit allocation to residents (which have to be paid for) to up 50 per year and may have to review this allocation further if the complaints continue although the removal of the free guest permit for residents as part of budget savings for 2023-24 may resolve some of the issues.

“As there would be no guest permit, then the visitor permits would then be used more for their actual purpose for visitors to residents during event days.”

Ten people commented on the traffic regulation order to end event-day permits.

Objectors complained about paying for visitor permits, lack of enforcement, match-day parking blocking the roads and even that they did not want the stadium.

The report to the committee said that scrapping the permits had no financial implications for the council.

The council’s Transport and Sustainability Committee is due to meet at Hove Town Hall at 4pm next Tuesday (3 October). The meeting is scheduled to be webcast on the council’s website.

Don’t you think you get enough money from us residents of Brighton you are gradually killing this town I’ve lived here all my life and I’m ashamed of Brighton and how money grabbing you are.
Why don’t you look at how much money is being paid to management and see how much money you could save there it’s shameful how much they get paid.

    Firstly what consultation
    2nd 2019 it’s already old info
3rd so I’m not aloud to have family ur friend over if it’s a match day, without having to pay out for a bunch of ticket that I may or may not use incase the dates do coincide really seems a bit unfair.!

So basically friends and family wont be able to visit us on a match day, it’s bad enough our kids having issues getting to see us on Father’s Day every year because of bike ride and the closure of Coldean lane. Is Coldean a residential village or an overflow car park for the Amex and Stamner Park events!

What a joke the football club pays for our parking now the council want us to pay for it with the cost of living crisis its putting a lot of people further in debt I’m totally against this

I do agree with scrapping event-day permits. It is Amex’s responsibility to ensure it has enough parking facilities available to handle event days or provide a park ‘n’ ride or similar method to get people on-site. The local area should not handle any of this.

Hearing that guest permits are being resold is concerning because those residents are perpetuating a problem, and there are plenty of ways of facilitating the identification of those individuals. Purchasing visitor permits would be in line with the rest of the city, and seems perfectly fair so I’m for removing free permits.

It’s an absolute nightmare to even get the parking permits for residents. I have the same cars and work van for the last few years but have to re apply. When I do this it’s the wrong documentation. Surely it should all be saved on the computer if nothing has changed why can’t they just be issued. They are making it harder for us residents to even park… what a waste of time and resources just to issue permits

Not all residents sell the second visitors permit to football fans!!! My family visit us on match days so use my second permit, if the permit gets taken away, they won’t be able to visit!!! Parking’s bad enough on a “non-event” day in MOULSECOOMB, let alone on match days, I’ve seen many cars parked around the estate on match days without permits but nothing seems to be done about it!!! If someone gets a ticket, most of the time the ticket gets thrown away and nothing more is done!!!!!

This is so annoying, if it’s not parking permits, even though no one parks up in our road when the match on, its always something else’s, like Coldean lane close for the bike ride, and it’s always happens to be on Fathers Day!! concerts in Stammer Park , just wondering what else is going to happen in Coldean!!

Can anyone provide proof or any documented evidence that permits are being sold? Sounds very much like an attempted justification to start charging residents to receive visitors on match days

It’s rubbish it means my disabled mother cannot have help at her property that day unless she pays for a permit for someone to visit her and I who don’t drive cannot afford to pay for someone to visit me
