The RNLI is due to host a flotilla off Brighton tomorrow (Sunday 21 July) to mark the lifeboat charity’s 200th anniversary.

The Brighton lifeboat crew said: “To celebrate 200 years of saving lives at sea, Brighton RNLI is hosting a pier to pier event to bring water users together.

“The event will start at 10am with a flyby from our Lifeboat. Crews from Shoreham and Newhaven will then join us.

“At 10.45am, Newhaven and Brighton will carry out an exercise running from east to west from Brighton Palace Pier to the West Pier.

“At 10.55am we are asking swimmers to create a human RNLI formation on the beach.

“The event will finish at 12 noon.

“We’d love to see you there.”

Congratulations 🙏🏼 . Yesterday 19/7/24, I was involved in assisting with carrying a young man from the water to the shoreline at 18.45 & with his CPR on the beach. It was obvious, the incident had not just occurred for the young man, as he was extremely cold & I, myself questioned, the slight ‘hump’ in the skyline when old at the waters edge for a minute. The beach was extremely busy, as expected on one of the warmest days this summer & I wonder if, with binoculars, this young man would have been spotted sooner. How many people do the public rescue on extremely popular days, when there are no lifeguards. Is flexitime ever considered, in years such as this, where there has actually been a lot of bad weather this summer. I do feel this young man may have a poor recovery, despite the public doing their utmost to preserve his life.

It was the public that performed CPR for 5 minutes on the young man, and after expelling large amounts of water & some vomit, he took his first breath again. He was then carried further up the beach and was covered with a blanket before the paramedics ( at the event on the beach) arrived & then the emergency ambulance crew. It was at this point that I left. The man did not regain consciousness, but was treated with dignity & respect ( ie a circle of privacy towels 🙏🏼💜) by the public. A friend of his did appear after the paramedics arrived. Another gentleman & girl both did a fantastic job at giving him CPR, while I maintained his airway, protected his head against stones etc.

I will make it my duty to carry a mouth guard & foil blanket, whenever I go the the beach now, because it is also the public that have to look after each other, on a beach full of people, . I wish the very best for this young man & have not heard of any ‘death’ since yesterday’s incident 🙏🏼🙏🏼. I am NHS ill health retired, have COPD & Asthma, can not swim, but I can still do my utmost to help anybody on a beach full of people where more incidents are likely to occur , due to numbers alone.

Absolutely no point in posting that RNLI aid and abet illegal immigrants in dinghy’s to get to the UK; this post will be deleted

Perhaps it is because the RNLI operates on the principle that every individual’s life matters & is against their purpose to stand by & watch any individual drowning
