PREVIEW – Clandestino

Clandestino Flamenco at Brighton Fringe

PREVIEW – Clandestino at Brighton Fringe

Brighton Fringe draws to a close this coming week with a burst of rhythm, fire and cross-cultural musical fusion as Clandestino returns to the Spiegeltent at this year’s Speigelgardens for what promises to be a joyful and electrifying finale to this year’s festival.

Blending flamenco, jazz and musical traditions from across the globe, the performance centres around the fierce and expressive footwork of city-based flamenco dancer Wafa Paton, whose percussive style drives the show with intensity and precision. Around her, an accomplished ensemble of musicians and vocalists weave together blistering guitar work, rich vocal harmonies and layered global rhythms into an immersive live experience.

The company’s sound moves fluidly between styles and traditions, featuring deep flamenco roots alongside jazz influences, Persian violin melodies, and earthy percussion including cajón, bongos and tabla. The result is less a straightforward concert and more a celebration of musical exchange, improvisation and shared cultural connection.

Joining the ensemble is master cantor Martín Paredes Mansilla, bringing the authentic vocal traditions of Andalusian flamenco, alongside Brighton-based jazz vocalist Rachel Myer. Together with musicians Fergusito Paton, Peter Lorenz, Jim Pinchon, Sara Khoroosi and Sudhi Pooniyil, the performance promises both technical virtuosity and emotional warmth.

While many Brighton Fringe shows thrive on experimentation, Clandestino appears to embrace something more timeless — rhythm, movement and communal joy. Set within the intimate atmosphere of the Spiegeltent, this looks set to be one of the festival’s most uplifting closing-night events. Tickets and information available via the Brighton Fringe website.
