Drink-driving cabbie banned by Brighton court

Annual summer crackdown on drink and drug drivers under way

A taxi driver who was caught over the drink-drive limit is among the latest people convicted and banned from the road as part of Sussex Police’s annual Christmas crackdown.

Peter Sourial, 34, of Trafalgar Road, Portslade, was arrested near by, in Lincoln Road, Portslade, in a Vauxhall Zafira on Wednesday 19 December. He was charged with driving with 71 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 10 January, he was banned from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Peter Takacs, 38, a chef, of Clarke Avenue, Hove, was arrested twice within a fortnight for drink driving, the first time in Bond Street, Brighton, on Sunday 16 December. He was charged with driving with 70 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

On Saturday 29 December Takacs was arrested in Surrenden Road, Brighton, and charged with driving with 63 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 3 January, he was banned from driving for 22 months for the first offence and three years for the second offence. He was also ordered to do 60 hours of community service over the next 12 months, pay £115 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Scott Dean, 43, a carpenter, of Bodiam Avenue, Bevendean, was arrested in Fox Hill, Haywards Heath, on Sunday 2 December and charged with driving a Ford Transit with 78 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 9 January, he was banned from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £500 fine, £85 costs and a £50 victim surcharge.

Alex Turner, 18, a shop worker, of Langridge Drive, Portslade, was arrested in Upper Shoreham Road, Shoreham, on Saturday 15 December and charged with driving a Seat Leon with 65 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Friday 4 January, he was banned from driving for 18 months. He was also ordered to pay a £184 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Oussama Jirari, 32, a waiter, of Hangleton Road, Hove, was arrested in Black Lion Street, Brighton, on Sunday 16 December. He was charged with driving a Renault Megane with 65 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, driving with no licence and driving with no insurance.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 3 January, he was banned from driving for 18 months. He was also ordered to pay a £414 fine, £55 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Ben Sierarowski, 23, a civil engineer, of Ham Close, Richmond upon Thames, was arrested in Cheapside, Brighton, on Tuesday 18 December. He was charged with failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis when suspected of having driven a vehicle.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 3 January, he was banned from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Paul Davies, 59, an engineer, of Eaton Gardens, Hove, was arrested in Eaton Gardens, on Thursday 20 December and charged with driving with 84 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 10 January, he was banned from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £623 fine, £85 costs and a £63 victim surcharge.

Tyler Thompson, 22, a telephonist, of Marden Close, Woodingdean, was arrested in North Road, Brighton, on Saturday 22 December and charged with driving a Fiat Punto with 80 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 10 January, he was banned from driving for 36 months. He was also ordered to pay a £364 fine, £85 costs and a £36 victim surcharge.

Jakes Mayes, 25, a computer consultant, of Larkspur Drive, Eastbourne, was arrested in Warren Road, Brighton, on Saturday 22 December and charged with driving with 87 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 10 January, he was banned from driving for 46 months and sentenced to a 12-month community order, requiring him to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Barry Williams, 44, an electrician, of The Brow, Woodingdean, was arrested in The Brow, on Wednesday 26 December and charged with driving with 48 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 10 January, he was banned from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £115 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

A total of 240 arrests were made in Sussex during the campaign, which ran from Saturday 1 December to Tuesday 1 January. Of those, 39 were arrested in Brighton and Hove.

The courts have convicted 57 of the 240 so far. A further 36 have been charged to attend court and the rest have either been released under investigation pending further inquiries or released without charge.
