The sale of unclaimed property handed to police has raised £280 for an alcohol awareness football tournament for young people in Moulsecoomb.

The free tournament next Saturday, February 27 is being run by Brighton and Hove Albion in partnership with Sussex Police and Communities Against Drugs (CAD).

Two tournaments will be running – one for under 14s and one for under 19s, with six teams in each age group. Each player will receive a free t-shirt for taking part and the winning team will take on the Police football team It is open to all young people in Moulsecoomb.

Becky Wilkinson from CAD said: “We will be using this event as an opportunity to publicise places where these young people can access help and support such as ru-ok?, the young persons’ substance misuse service.

“CAD has run a number of youth related projects in the past to deliver educational elements around substances and these have been successful in raising awareness about the harms of drugs or alcohol. We are delighted to receive the money from Sussex Police to help towards running yet another successful event.”

PC Donna Bagguley said: “It is envisaged that the young people taking part will directly benefit from the strong harm prevention theme that will run throughout the event, as well as having a fun and energetic evening!”

Cllr Anne Meadows added: “I would like to thank Sussex Police for their donation to this project as, I know, the Moulsecoomb Local Action Team has always pushed for more provision for young people in the area. This is a fantastic opportunity for more of them to get involved in football as well as raising awareness about the effects of drugs and alcohol on young people.”

For more information or to register for the tournament, which takes place from 6.45pm to 9pm at Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre, please contact Ian Dean from Brighton and Hove Albion on 07941 324755 by Saturday February 21.
