The Seagulls lost their opening game of the season for the second year running.
Leo Ulloa put the Albion in front after 13 minutes but former Albion target Ross McCormack levelled six minutes later.
Both teams had chances to regain the lead but in the last minutes of injury time Luke Murphy bundled the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak although the Albion players were convinced that he controlled the ball with his hand prior to scoring.
Albion are next due to play on Tuesday (6 August) when they are scheduled to meet Newport County AFC in the Capital One League Cup at the Amex.
