Old bus ready to run new route along Brighton seafront

A new seafront bus route starts next weekend but it will be served by an old Routemaster, complete with conductor.

The new 10 will have a retro feel for passengers taking the coast road route between the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove and Brighton Station.

The first number 10 bus is scheduled to set off next Sunday (15 June) from the station. It will go past the Royal Pavilion and the Palace Pier on its way to the King Alfred. The hourly service will run until Saturday 13 September.

Brighton and Hove Buses said that the 10 had been timetabled for passengers arriving or leaving on London trains.

The fare will be £2 for adults and £1 for children. Under-fives go free and concessionary passes are accepted. Savers can also be used on this route.

Brighton and Hove Buses commercial director Mike Best said: “We hope that residents and tourists will enjoy using this service which will be a trip down memory lane for some and a brand new experience for others.

“The service offers a picturesque route for those visiting or staying at one of the seafront hotels.

“Route 10 will be a fantastic reminder of the strong heritage Brighton and Hove has in providing public bus services.”

Great just what we need a vintage bus blocking the traffic even more on the only viable route across the town for people wanting to avoid the Brighton Station pinch point or the unwanted changes to Eastern Road.
No doubt the spiteful greens will try to use this as a reason for a new bus lane taking up most of the A259 now

It will struggle to take today’s pushchairs and if using a wheelchair or wheeled walking aid, I think it wise to remember what kind of service they were built to provide and not to expect what today’s single decker, flat access, etc. offer.

Ahhh…..the days of hopping on and off moving London double deckers without doors that had to be opened…..this one will probably have doors to prevent this.

What a shame there are negative comments. This is just once an hour on one route. Wonderful for nostalgia. How sad that, as is so often the case, the only people who seem to bother posting on here have to criticise because they appear not to have read the news properly. It’s NOT a long term replacement for a regular commuter route, it will hardly affect the already busy summer traffic, and there will still be plenty of alternative services for the less able or those with buggies etc.!

Fab journey on the number 10 today! Great seeing the seafront from the top deck – I’ve lived here for some time but never been on a bus along the seafront. Just needs advertising a bit more as there was hardly anyone on it! Get rid of these negative comments – the idea is fab!

What a great idea ! An old AEC ! Something for the tourists and the locals alike. Will make sure I do it before the summer’s out. As for the Greens ? They should do something about the menace that are cyclists that ride through red traffic lights, don’t look where they’re going and join car drivers on the road w/o looking. They should be registered and display a number like everyone else that uses the road.
