Siege at St Peter’s – man slips while 100ft up the scaffolding outside landmark Brighton church

A distressed man who climbed 100ft up scaffolding outside St Peter’s Church in Brighton this afternoon (Tuesday 15 August) slipped, fell and injured himself.

Police, firefighters and medics stood by as officers tried to encourage him to come down safely, including the air ambulance which landed on The Level.

The drama started to unfold at about 3.30pm when the man scaled the scaffold and began shouting.

Witnesses said that the man was threatening to jump and kill himself.

Sussex Police said: “The man climbed more than 100ft up the scaffolding on the church at 3.35pm.

“He was shouting but, as officers started to negotiate with him, it appeared he had fallen on to another part of the scaffolding, injuring himself.”

The man was brought down by rescuers from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and taken to an ambulance on a stretcher for assessment and treatment.

Is this someone you know? Do you know they’re an idiot? Do you know their motivation for doing this? No? Well maybe hold off on the reactionary call for imprisonment. The fact this has been noted means it’s not the normal run of things so maybe the reason they ended up there is something out of the ordinary

@ Glen ford: Pray that you never have mental health struggles and be glad that this chap is alive to see the sun rise tomorrow morning. Peace and love man.

The person on Twitter thought it might be a graffiti tagger but a friend of mine who was in the area said it was someone who’d had a row with what looked like his girlfriend or wife. I hope he – they – get the help needed whether it’s for anger, mental health or something else.
