Glastonwick festival is in full flow – Day 2

EAST TOWN PIRATES + ESE & THE VOODUU PEOPLE + COMBAT SHOCK + HELEN McCOOKERYBOOK + BARNSTORMER 1649 + JOE SOLO + SMILEY & THE UNDERCLASS – GLASTONWICK 2018

The Glastonwick Beer, Music and Poetry Festival is now well under way at Church Farm, Coombes, near Steyning.

Once again today, the atmosphere was totally relaxed with people of varying ages lapping up the sun, music, poetry, beers and food. This is such a great event, that I would urge people to at least give it a go on the final day (Sunday 3rd June).

Lovely place to chill out

The owners of the farm are obviously trying really hard to diversify with what they have got to offer. I suspect that quite a number of people would have come here in springtime to see and feed the baby lambs. This treat is not just for the kids as there are later in the day feeds that adults can participate in, for that animal therapy.

Coombes Church

We had a wander in the sun around the campsite and also into the charmingly picturesque Coombes Church, which is situated immediately next door to where Glastonwick is held. There a plaque inside the church that records that the Coombes community was recorded in the Doomsday Book.

Doomsday Plaque

We managed to see eight of the eleven artists taking part on Day 2. Those being:

East Town Pirates

East Town Pirates (who recounted historical East Suffolk stories to the sound akin to pirate rock ‘n’ roll),

Ese & The Vooduu People

Ese & The Vooduu People (a trio based in Brixton who play electric soul),

Combat Shock

Combat Shock (really decent Brighton based no nonsense punk band fronted by Mel),

Helen McCookerybook

Helen McCookerybook (absolutely charming guitar playing songstress famed for heading Helen & The Horns and John Peel favourites The Chefs),

Barnstormer 1649

Barnstormer 1649 (Brighton, Hove and Southwick’s sons of Renaissancecore and Baroque ‘n’ Roll headed up by Attila The Stockbroker),

Joe Solo

Joe Solo (is a musician, writer, activist, poet and broadcaster from Scarborough),

Smiley & The Underclass

Smiley & The Underclass (are 4 guys that play wicked and wild Dub Punk outta London).

Stage times for Day 3 (Sunday 3rd June) start at 12:15pm and finish at 5:30pm, so there will be ample opportunity for you to try some of the 80+ cask-conditioned beers, cider, perry and food that is on offer.

Glastonwick co-organiser Attila The Stockbroker introduces Helen McCookerybook to the crowd

The event is organised by Attila The Stockbroker and Alex Hall, in conjunction with the Duke Of Wellington, Church Farm and the Ropetackle Centre and tickets can be purchased online or in person at the Ropetackle Arts Centre as well as in person from the Duke Of Wellington, Brighton Road, Shoreham (01273 389818), The Schooner, Albion Street, Southwick (01273 592991), The Evening Star, Surrey Street, Brighton (01273 328931) and Anchored in Worthing (01903 529100).

Nice report and was an enjoyable festival.

Two observations: personally I’d prefer less of a political soundstage and more of a chilled out beer & music festival which may attract a bigger crowd. Marshalling of the campsite overnight would be welcome so that some inconsiderate campers don’t keep the noise and party going until 4.45am; at least the dawn chorus drowned them out a bit…
